- Sony Computer Entertainment America has officially dropped the retail price of the current PlayStation 2 systems from US$199 to US$179. This move is to clear the stocking of the current model, and Sony will release the new model of PlayStation 2 system in June for $199, which will bundled with the Network Adapter. The new model will include several new functions, such as ability to read DVD+RW, DVD-RW, as well as built-in IR port and progressive scan

-Built-in Infrared (IR) Receiver—The old DVD Remote Control (SCPH-10150) will work with this console, but this remote has no (Standby)/Reset button or Eject button. The consumer will not need the IR Receiver Unit (SCPH-10160).
-No I-Link port
-Time Display feature on DVD Playback function—A new setting displays the Chapter Number and 4 different running times.

Progressive Scan
Although current PlayStation 2 consoles do not support progressive scan as it pertains to DVD movies, they do support it in regards to video games (where those games also support that capability). For example, ATV Offroad Fury 2 (a 1st party title) utilizes progressive scan. However, in addition to the game, the consumer’s television would have to:
Support progressive scan video input (HDTV)
Use the Component AV Cable (for PlayStation 2) (SCPH-10100) to connect the console to the television.
Playback of DVD-RW discs recorded in VR (Video Recording) Mode
The new SCPH-50001N console series has a DVD-RW compliant DVD player, which can play DVD-RW discs that were recorded in VR mode. However, this console can only playback these DVDs, not record them.
