It's what you make of it.
In my opinion, there are many reasons not to use a traditional message board ... not just HAN
- Google Search is more powerful than a HAN Search. Google aggregates all information relative to your question. Our automotive forums are then matched against all others ... often getting drive-by / hit and run traffic (get what you need, bounce). Unless you're paid for it, someone will always have better content.
- There's more to do on the internet. Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit have fractured a visitors browsing time.
- Aging user base + no push for new registrations = this. We all got old. We have other responsibilities ... not just f*ck around between classes / study sessions
- The onslaught of ads on the site. To a visitor, sponsored messages and ad-sense wreak havoc on usability. The entire site feels like it'll steal your information.

99% of the time, I hold my poops until I have to shower ... unless I really gotta poop.

Oh, other people's writing doesn't bother me. I really appreciate the thought more than the presentation. My OCD is strange. If it's under my control or my possession, it has to be perfect.
