Cold Air Intake (CAI) is cold air brought into your engine from outside the engine bay. Hot Air Intake is air brought into your engine from inside the engine bay. I learned this from my post a while ago about the AEM CAI. Cold air is better (I think), but everybody says that you will hydrolock your car. But from who I talked to, people that have had it for years, said that its not that big of a risk. You pretty much have to run through a 3-4ft puddle and sit in it and get the filter totally in the water for it to hydrolock. But I wouldnt know becuase I havent ordered my CAI yet.

cold air is better

cold air particles=more dense

hot air particles = less dense/spread out

the more air you can cram into your combustion chambers = the better/more efficient combustion will be. if you get say a cubic foot of hot air into a space, and cubic foot of cold air into the same space, the cold air will have more mass/more particles because it is more dense.

thus also explaining why forced induction systems work so good. you can get TONS more air into your cylinders, therefore the combustion is alot more complete than naturally aspirated engines. this results in alot more horsies

oh and don't worry about hydro locking.... unless you are a moron and take your car swimming, it won't be a problem.

It's a problem that is so over hyped, you have more of a chance of someone throwing a flaming arrow at you while you are trying on some new Gucci shoes while listening to the YMCA song on your new Fisher boombox while in the middle of a heat wave!

That's what bypass valves are for. Hydrolock is very rare anyway.

bypass valves make it almost like a short ram, so most people dont like it, its RARE but it happens...and if it happens to you, its not so rare any more
