Bore gauge, different sized micrometers, dial indicator, valve spring compressor, piston ring pliers, piston ring compressor and more that i'm trying to think of.

In terms of knowledge, there isn't much to know because mostly you are just measuring everything and seeing what parts need to be replaced or unless there has been damage done to the engine parts. Basically you're checking for parts wear, damage, if theres dirt or sludge in the engine pretty much anything that will cause an engine to run bad. If you think you're ready to take on a project such as this, go for it.
