Default What can go wrong with a leaking oil filter?

Hi,

I changed my oil filter about a month ago.
Yesterday, I noticed that oil level had dropped drastically low.
So I filled it up again.

The oil is not leaking from the drain bolt. I suspect that it is leaking from the oil filter which might be loose. There is no oil stain on my garage floor; so I suspect that the oil leaks only when I am driving.

What could go wrong if I do not tighten my oil filter? Also, I can now hear some "bursts" near the exhause every 2 seconds. I suspect the noise might originate from the engine.

Thanks for your replies.

Did actually get under the car to see if oil was leaking out the seal?

(Did you put a thin streak of oil on the rubber gasket of the filter before putting it on?)

You could be burning it. Bad rings could be sending into the combustion chamber to be burned and thus resulting is very low oil levels. I had that problem and my oil was 3 quarts low at times without any leaks at all. It is unlikely that your oil filter is leaking, so I would check the condition of the rings.

check the rings a comprssion check would probably do the trick....but if your not seeing any blue smoke yet i would worry to much......cuz your engine natually burns oil in small amounts but it shouldn't have gone down that much in a month

If you are missing that much oil in a month and there isn't massive puddles of oil under your car when you park it, you are burning it. Is there soot on your back bumper? Is blue/black smoke coming out when you either accelerate or decelerate?

Default still fixing the problem

It also seems that one of my spark plugs is misfiring.
I will first try to change the wire set. If required I will change the spark plugs too.

I also found some oil at the bottom of each spark plug. I only dipped in some tissue paper to check this. Could the ring be the problem here too?

Thanks

Your valve cover gasket and the little gaskets on the underside of your valve cover, where your sparkplugs go, need to be replaced. You spark plug wires are fine. Change out your plugs. Check your oil at least every week. If it keeps getting to low, you will spin a rod

DO A COMPRESSION TEST NOW.

I guarantee you are burning it. I had the same problem with oil on my spark plugs and I had fried rings. Get a compression and leakdown test to confirm but I bet it is your rings.

hi,

I changed the spark plugs and changed the wires too and the noise is gone ! I tried not changing the wires, but a little noise was still there.

Total cost = $70

I will be checking the oil level today.

Thanks for all the comments.
