Default What can go wrong with a leaking oil filter?

Hi,

I changed my oil filter about a month ago.
Yesterday, I noticed that oil level had dropped drastically low.
So I filled it up again.

The oil is not leaking from the drain bolt. I suspect that it is leaking from the oil filter which might be loose. There is no oil stain on my garage floor; so I suspect that the oil leaks only when I am driving.

What could go wrong if I do not tighten my oil filter? Also, I can now hear some "bursts" near the exhause every 2 seconds. I suspect the noise might originate from the engine.

Thanks for your replies.
