I used to wash my car every week but as I got older its every other week or when I feel like it really needs it. You should be fine just make sure that you are using soap thats made for cars and not dish washing soap.

dont use cloth/cotton towels to dry your car. even if theyre clean, they wiLL scratch your car w/ fine swirls. like someone said, use a chamois or better yet, get the Absorber. its this syntethic cloth-like material that soaks up crazy water w/o scratching your paint. and as long as you keep the absorber clean, it wont ever leave water spots. using a California Wiper Blade cuts down on water left on your car like 90% if used correctly, no joke. this way, water has a lot less time to just sit. very efficient.

if you keep your car in a garage, obviously you wont need to wash it as much. other things to consider are time spent in hot sun (dirt, sap, bugs and water can literally bake onto your paint), whether its rained (left to air-dry, dirt, pollen, and other particles can collect. this + hot sun = bad), and driving environments (i.e. dusty roads, bugs smashed on the front end). spring and summer, i wash my car about once a week cause i dont have a garage using quality soap from eagle1. i wax it about once a month w/ various waxes or polishes during spring/summer. fall and winter i wash about once every other week and wax once every 2-3 months.

chamois have no nap the inevitable dirt that accumulates on one will mar your paint. Cotton towels are fine but there is no such thing as a 100% cotton towel (there are always traces of polyester in them, which was designed pound for pound to be stronger than steel). Microfiber is really the way to go...

which is why i suggested you keep it clean, whichever you end up using, besides towels. but good point.
