Yeah, you could fabricate something to fit into the space above the ashtray fairly easily. I just used the bezel because it is still right in front of me and it was only $25 off ebay. You get used to the gauges being blocked after a while. All you need to know is when your gas is low and when your car is overheating, and those portions of the gauges are still visible.

Now that I think about it, the autometer bezel tapers a little more than the ebay one I got, but for $40 more.
