Default What speed is optimal fuel efficiency?

I was thinking of going on a long road trip and was wondering if there are stats onwhich speed is the most fuel efficient?

Also if anyone knows which gears at lower speeds are the most efficient, is it always the highest gear you can be in?

P.S. I have a stock '04 RSX S-type

In our RSX-s we get about 30mpg on the highway on cruise at 80, if I were to slow down to 70 I would probably pick a couple of miles per gallon.

In traffic don't go anywhere near the redline or the vtec cut-in, shift between 3 and 4K if even that high.

30mpg at 80? that doesnt sound right. no disrespect, just saying that usually the mpg ratings of a car aren't at a speed of 80mph. and a 2004 rsx-s is rated at 31mpg - hwy. and considering were around 3500 - 4000 rpm at 80 in 6th..... i dunno, just my 2 cents. i mean, sure you may AVERAGE 30mpg on the whole TANK, but obviously mpg goes down, as speed & rpm's go up.

No, I just did it, filled up when we left and when we got back filled up again, at the same gas station by my house, it took 5.537 gallons and the round trip was 170.6 miles. We got better mileage in our 2002 RSX-s averaging about 35 mph on long drives at steady highway speeds, which for me is between 80 and 85mph. I have always beaten the highway mileage on the window sticker by a good bit, except in my 99 Dakota 4wd 3.9L V6, which was always carrying a load and had ladder racks on it, and I was happy as hell getting 15mpg. When I had the bed loaded down with about 1500# of tile I was lucky to get 12mpg, but it was a work truck, not a toy.

When we are buzzing around the local areas and in the city we get about 25-28mpg, and neither my wife or I aren't easy on the gas pedal at traffic lights.

Don't forget about driving styles also, I'm not reving to the limits of the car, I'm nowhere near the redline, don't see the need for it on these types of drives. We don't cruise around town in second gear either with the engine at the verge of vtec cutin, just in the gear it will drive along in without lugging. However if I have an interesting road in front of me that I find challenging I will drive the car like it wants to be, provided the traffic will allow it. During this type of driving gas mileage drops of considerably, but not below 20mpg.

Yea really. If you go 55-60 in a 70 zone to get maximum fuel effeciency, you'll probably get run over and killed in the proccess. At least around here anyway.
