Formula D - Round One at Road Atlanta
Formula D - Round One at Road Atlanta
Honda-Acura.net is proud to cover the inaugural season of the Formula D Drift Championship. A four- round championship series, Formula D takes the Japanese drift competition style in a new direction, by introducing a broader range of competitors and vehicles into the scene.
With the season opener at Road Atlanta, crowds flocked to the first competitive drift event outside of CA. And as reflected by the judges’ scores, the American drivers are proving to be formidable competitors.
Qualifying: Andy Yen & Team Autolink.
Taking his car to the limits, Team Autolink driver Andy Yen lost a tire in the first round of Qualifying. While many thought the day was over early for Yen, Yen and the rest of the Autolink team were able to complete repairs and still qualify in the top 10.
Pfeiffer and Hubinette.
Alex Pfeiffer almost knocked out Sam Hubinette in the first round of Qualifying by keeping on his tail not once but twice in tandem formation. In a particularly noteworthy display of car control, Alex not only kept speed with the much more powerful Viper, but took every opportunity to pass or otherwise nudge Hubinette off of the race line. Indicative of the level of competition that day, Hubinette noted how much he pushed the massive Viper - with Pfeiffer gamely hanging on only inches away.
This round of fierce combat made life hard for the the 3 judge panel, who wished that Pfeiffer and Hubinette would have met in latter rounds. But in a controversial decision, The judges gave Hubinette the victory by a very slim margin.
Final Round: Forsberg v. Hubinette
In the final round of competition, Chris Forsberg in the Motorex 350Z and Sam Hubinette's Mopar Viper took each other to the wall -literally- numerous times. With mere inches between bumpers and copious tire smoke all over the track, the fury of battle was reflected in the crowds intensity. Both the crowd and judges were deadlocked; the margin was simply too close.
With the judgment of "One more time!" - issued from judges “Tarzan” Yamada, Ucchi Utsumi and Seigou Yamamoto - Forsberg and Hubinette went at it again. In the impromptu second round of final competition, Sam Hubinette walked away with the first event win by the narrowest of margins. All in all, it was a spectacular start to the Formula D
Championship.
And so, here are the Official Standings at the end of Round One:
PLACE: DRIVER VEHICLE:
1st: Samuel Hubinette Dodge Viper.
2nd: Chris Forsberg Motorex 350Z
