Default New Prelude Owner (4th Gen) 4WS needs help!!!

Hey guys, I am officially part of the Honda family again. After my 96 Accord I bought a 2001 BMW 325. I now bought a 92 Prelude Si 4WS today as a project car!!!! It has 155K mile but it still pulls VERY strongly!!! I am VERY surprised. Body is in good shape and the interior is in great shape. I picked it up for $1800

Now for the bad news. After driving the car around for the day, I noticed that the rear right tire was low. RIGHT when I was about to go to get it filled up I noticed that the 4WS light on the dash panel light up. I turned off the car, let it sit for a few minutes, then turned it bad on. The light went away. Then I filled the tire up (only has 12 psi in it ), turned the car back on and the light came on again. I drove the car back home. Let it sit for 30 min, turned the car on and the light was gone. I went to fill it up with gas, turned the car off, filled the car up, turn the car on again and the light is back on.

Anyone have a similar problem like this with 4WS?? Is it bad??? The car handles fine, no unusual noises coming from the car. Any ideas what it could be??

Your help is GREATLY appreciated!!!

I'd try to disconnect the power from teh battery for a good 2-3 minutes to reset the ECU and see if the light comes back on. Make sure all tires have good tire pressure as well, I know on the SH tire pressure trips lights from time to time.

Hmmm, I would say it has a real good chance but is it a recall or a TSB? If it's a recall then any dealer will still have to honor it, if it's a TSB the best at this point you could hope for would be a discounted repair.

Hey THATPRELUDEGUy, I REALLY appreciate your help. I am going to go to the dealer today to see what they can do for me. Wish me luck!!

This car is a BLAST to drive. The Si is VERY peppy, particularly in the lower RPM range. That is where my BMW lacks. I love the torque. If my car is as quick as it feels I wonder what the VTEC Prelude feels like.
I can't wait to get out on the AutoX track!!!!

Thanks again.

i recently purchased a 1992 si 4ws. i too had a cel light come on and jumpered the blue plug to find a code 29. noshoaccord were you getting a code 29 or a code 62 cel?(code 62 is fixed by resoldering the 2 relays in the control unit) after doing the full diagnosis per the honda repair manual, i found that the culprit is the rear main steering angle sensor! so noshoaccord, i was wondering what came of your call to the honda dealership on this matter? im about to go and purchase a new sensor from majestichonda.com for 140, or get the entire actuator and gear + sub sensor and rear main sensor for 100(used). i now know it is definetly a faulty sensor as the light only reappears when hard cornering. if it were the acutator in the other hand, it would be on immediatly apon turning the wheel due to contamination in the gears themselves.
let me know.

Hey man,

I went to the Honda dealer and they said that the rear angle sensor recall was already performed on my car. I tried everything to fix my 4WS issue.

Then, about a month ago, someone posted the re-sodering of all 10 connections on the two relays on the 4WS ECU. As soon as I resodered all 10 points...my 4WS has worked perfectly fine.

I was getting an error 62.

Did you go to the dealer to see if they performed the recall on your car??

yeah i called honda of america and had them run the vin# to see if it had been taken care of yet. it had not. so i called the dealership and there ordering the parts. gotta love free parts and labor!

thats good to hear that you were able to simply resolder those 10 jumper points and fix the code 62. from what i gather, those 2 relays are the power relays for the actuator motor, one right wheel, one left wheel.

AWESOME, man!!! I am glad many of us are getting our 4WS to work as they should.

You have NO IDEA how happy I was when my 4WS started to work every time.

Hope all works out for you.
