The answer-it is illegal to begin with. It will NOT increase performance on a basically stock car. It sounds terrible (IMO) and you will NOT pass smog generally. For the money-buy a Hi-flow cat and a quality exhaust like a Thermal.

When cats first came out in 1974, they robbed anywhere from 30-100 hp from engines. But remember, that was the days of big block Detroit iron and carbed motors with no computer controls. Today, engines are so well tuned, engineered, and low emissions to begin with that the converter isn't such a big factor in performance. You will not yield much of anything but a fine the next time you register it.

Supposedly cutting out the cat give you more hsp but cut some of your torque. I can understand why some people do it, but I still think that when you speed away from me, I don't wan a nasty smell. Don't you think there's enough pollution, we don't need more, and that's what the cat is for. Unless you are seriously close to be super fast just by a nice sounding exhaust and a high flow cat vs. getting a huge fine. Always better to go safe than stupid.
