A QT. every 1K maybe "acceptable", but plumes of smoke under acceleration like some old Volkswagen is not--and it's embarrassing considering I've always changed the oil every 3K.

 

One other thing,

Nowadays, with all the pollution controls on cars and the catalytic converters, I would expect the car manufaturer does not want a lot of oil to be heading out the tail pipe. I wonder how excess oil in the exhaust affects catalytic converter efficiencey??
