Has anyone run aftermarket speaker wire into the doors of a 5th gen?

I came across a great article (on ntpog.org) that detailed how to run wire through the factory wiring harness, but rather not take the chance of drilling through such an expensive part. Has anyone found another way to run wire in, possibly by drilling a small hole in the door and sealing it off?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
