Default grinding in reverse.....

hey guys, on that 89 lude I bought..... when I put it into reverse, it tends to grind....I checked the tranny fluid and it was full, I havent driven the car yet so someone suggested it could be rust on the flywheel since it was sitting for a while and that it would go away when I drove it a while....the clutch is engaging because I can put it in first etc, just that reverse tends to grind, and reverse doesnt have a synchro, any suggestions? thanks....

Just align the synchros and the gears. Before shiftiing in reverse run the stick into 1-5 gears and then reverse. This aligns everything so that there's no grindage.

Yep, he's right: it's because 5th and reverse are "aligned", don't worry too much about it, it'll come as a natural action after a short while, besides, you won't be drag racing anyone in reverse (at least i hope not) so time really isn't of the essence when you need to reverse.
