Default 5th gen engine whining

Hopefully this isn't covered in a hundred other threads. I did do a search.

My wife has a '99 5th gen SS. Recently I had the tranny replaced due to my complaining that it downshifted poorly, in addition to the noise from a bad auto-tensioner. The dealership agreed and replaced the tranny, under warranty; couldn't find anything on the tensioner - at the time I didn't know to tell them to look at it.

After tranny install there surfaced a whining noise (for lack of a better term to describe the sound). Back to the dealership, that claimed a new tranny was needed. Now the tensioner problem was "found" and the tensioner and timing belt replaced.

A few weeks later: the noise from the tensioner is gone, but it seems like the whining noise has returned. I notice it can be heard with the tranny in neutral (or any gear), but at around 2K - 3K RPM.

I'm thinking this ISN'T a transmission problem .. maybe never was. Anyone have ideas?

It isn't a secret the SS has had problems, I know ...

Have you made sure your power steering and alternator belts are tight enough?

No, but I will check this. Thanks for the idea!
