Default Easy ?? for anyone with a 93-96 vtec W/5-sp trans

Can you tell me exactly how many rpm's your turning a 60mph. When I do the math I get a figure that seams kinda high. I'd like to confirm this before I order a different 5th gear for my planned swap.

Thanks,

Jim C.

on a H23A1 5spd. 5th gear going 60mph is almost exactly 3000rpm

its prolly pretty close to the H22A1. looking at the gear ratios.

What gear ratio for 5th are you using? And what final drive ratio?

My info say's 5th for the 92-96 SI vtec 5sp prelude is .87 . With a final drive ratio of 4.27:1

Giving 135mph at 7500rpm's. When I divide 135 into 7500, I get 55.56 rev's per mile per hour. So 55.56 X 60 (MPH) I get,
3337 rpm's at 60mph

Know when I take the SI (non vtec) and it's 5th gear ratio of .81 and the same final drive of 4.27:1, I get 127mph at 6500rpm's.
I get 3070rpm's at 60mph.

I really hoping that I'm wrong and it's really is at most 3000rpm's.

that sounds right. i have the Si (non-vtec) and its almost exactly at 3000rpms (your calculations were 3070rpms) so you're prolly right with the 3337 for the vtec transmission.

ive seen a lot of people take the F22A1 manual transmisson from the S model 92-96 prelude. it has a much taller 5th gear. great for turbo applications and such.

That's my plan, but I was hoping, really hoping that I was wrong and wasn't going to have to do that. I'll be commuting with the car, so it's really important to me. Thanks for the imput.

I might as well have them inspect the syncro's for 2nd and 3rd while the case is open.

prolly good idea to have the syncro's checked. i gotta rev match downshifting to 3rd so it doesnt make a wonderous cruch-grinding noise. better to get that taken care of. make sure you put a good quality MTF in there too. Redline or Honda MTF, is suggested.
