Default 2nd gen question....

I was at my independent Honda shop this afternoon, they have a clean and straight '87 Si with a manual transmission for sale. Can any of the "newer" Honda/Acura engines be swapped into this car? It doesn't have to have gobs more power, I'm just looking for something to replace what must be a very tired engine....a B series, most likely.

I'm not expert on engines, but from what I can find your best bet would be to replace it with a lower mileage B20A.

2nd gens have an A20A engine, same as the 86-89 accord. There are JDM B20A's for 2nd gens, but they are a little bit different than the 3rd gen B20A and aren't interchangeable.
