6 sp trans in a 5thgen lude?
I have a 99 lude and I desperately want a sixth gear. Short of having something completely custom done, is there any way of swapping a K series 6 speed trans into my ride? does anyone make adapter plates, so on?
why do you want a 6th gear? its not like what you think itll be, its not like your just adding a 6th gear to what gears you already have. each gear will be shorter. just get the m2b4 tranny. i have it and its great. LSD, and the vtec trannys are designed to keep you in vtec upon reving gears out.
Is it not obvious why he wants a sixth gear?
I don't think he is concerned with speed...
It's called gas mileage on the highway...
Extra gear = less rpms = less gas used
As for the speed:
Just adding an extra sixth gear to your current tranny, will not increase acceleration... It may increase top speed, but only if the engine has a strong torque curve in the lower rpm range (typical of large-displacement engines, aka less efficient engines), as is NOT the case with the prelude... Torque peak is at 5250, so shifting into a gear at a lower rpm than this will not add any "extra" top speed... The car may actually slow down to the speed at which the lower torque rating is actually able to keep constant speed...
A "real" 6 speed tranny will have shorter gears throughout, which translates into a better mechanical advantage for the engine, and therefore = better acceleration, WHILE IN GEAR (terms of G's)... Don't forget there is an "extra" gear change that takes time to complete...
But I don't think the tranny swap is even viable...
I agree, u want a sixth gear, buy an S2k.

There is no 6 speed manual transmission Honda makes or has ever made that will fit into a Prelude. Even if you could get the Civic Si trans to fit, Prelude engines rotate the opposite direction from Si engines (look under the hoods of both cars, you'll see the accessory motors on opposite sides).
The only possible way is to have someone build one from scratch given the dimensions of a Prelude.
If I were you, I'd just sell the 'Lude and buy a Civic Si (or S2K if you can afford one). You get your 6 speeds, plus a whole slew of goodies never conceiveable when our Preludes were made (LSD with VSC, drive by wire electronic throttle control, 6 disc in dash changer w/mp3 and even navigation, side and curtain airbags). All for about $21k. Great deal.
