I know in a 5G when this happens, it's time to kiss your SS tranny goodbye. But then again, people say that the SS isn't a reliable transmission. I disagree, but that's what they say.....
If I had to venture a guess, it may be your neutral safety switch. If the car isn't in park or neutral, it will not start. Try starting it in neutral.

When D4 flashes on your dash, it means that there is either;
a) a communication error between the ECM and the TCM (Transmission Control Module) OR
b) A problem with one or more TCM controlled devices.

This could be a result of many things. In the case of the engine not wanting to start, it could very well be the P/N safety switch causing the problem. Both the ECM and the TCM take signals from all the engine sensors (TPS, IAC, CTS, O2, etc) so a good place to start with this issue is to see if there are any current or stored codes in your ECM and correct them as needed.
Generally, the D4 light will flash if your TCC (Torque Converter Solenoid) or Shift Solenoids are having problems. The P/N Safety switch is another that will cause this.
One last thing could be at fault here... and I hate to even mention it. The TCN or ECU could be having problems (faulty).
Hope this helps.

Heyyy guys I just happended 2 be on the boards today havent been here for a few months. And I used 2 have the same problem. 1st to see if this is the same problem, my car wud neva start if sitting directly in the sun. But if it was in the sahde or no sun out it wud start fine. And the car wud never start if the light was blinking. U need 2 change the main relay. It's within the wiring behind the dash like where u would keep ur alarm brain. The piece is not expensive @ all and u can put it on ur self unless u wanna pay honda there 80$ a hour. Hopefully I helped some of u guys out, cuz I kno the annoying feeling of wondering if u could leave in time....

I agree with the guy above me, main relay is most likely the cause, I don't have an automatic but I know that whole "my car will start sometimes, and sometimes it won't" so then you sit there maybe smoke a cig or something and then try it again and???huh!?!? it started, yeah this really will happen a lot if its really hot outside or if you drove the car for a little while and then stopped and maybe ten mins later you go to try to start it and nope not happening. I would have that checked that is my guess on you guys problem, not to mention its a hell of a lot cheaper than all those tranny parts and it can be tested so do yourself a favor the next time you get it started go to the dealership and say heres my key, I think my main relay is going out and explain to them exactly what your car is doing. goodluck

If it was the main relay, the D4 light would not blink. You have an issue with the transmission.

Do me a favor, find me one document (shop manual, etc) that stays the D4 light blinks when there is a problem with the main relay. The TCU handles the trouble codes for the transmission and it blinks the D4 light for transmission related issues.

Well I don't care what any manual says, because I had my entire transmisson checked out and it was fine. So what does that tell u..And if it were the transmission I doubt it would function differently depending on the sun. I Don't mean 2 argue, but I'm for sure thatthe main relay is the problem for this..
