if your gauge sweeps and moves all the way to hot, then it IS the sensor. there is no real test for them unless you want to compare temperature to ohm readings (which is a pain because they are never exact). but i would replace the sensor since you know it is either the gauge or the sensor. gauge works. has to be sensor or wiring.
