Default Dash Light Demise

G'day. Just bought a 91 VTECH imported to NZ from Japan several years ago. Nice car but when I turn the lights on the digital dash readout for the Temp and Fuel dim until invisible. Turn lights off and they return. Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply.

Tyyyyyyyyypo !!

Not being a complete mechanical numpty I looked for a dimmer but it was obvious only by its absence! Couldnt find one. Also, the digital dash readouts of temp and fuel dont always come on at startup. Today for example they came on 10 mins in and only after accelerating hard from lights? Also the 4WS light comes on and goes off at random a few times a day? I understand from previous archived posts that the battery can be detached for about 10 mins to reset the Engine management system which may solve any spurious indications . Just wondered if there was potentially something more sinister behind this lightshow or lack thereof? The car has had a lady owner and a good history over the last 5 years and Im just hoping she aint going to let me down so early in our new relationship. Any thoughts based on experieneces would be welcome to a newbie "Lude" owner. Thanks

Check the battery and alternator....sometimes my alternator connection comes loose and i have to plug it back in....there should be a dimmer relay right by the switch to the sunroof. Do you have a Check Engine Light?

Hi

No relay on the dash by the sunroof button, just a blanked out switch position.

No engine check light ... and the fault behaved itself all of yesterday. I suspect loose wiring prob as you suggest and will check it out .

Very useful forum ... keep up the good work.

Thanks.

OK Ill have a go at postin. Not very exciting compared to some of the outstanding "ludes" posted on another thread. But for her age she is in very good nick. The only thing non standard about this car though is that she,s currently driven by a guy over 40 !! She was cheap enough so I plan to export her back to Oz end of year for my son.
