Default Check Engine Light

h: I have a 99 Prelude and the check engine light came on all of a sudden. The car is running like usual with no apparent changes in the way it is driving. Am I going to have to take it to a mechanic to have them get the light to go off? Any insight on how to get the light to go off would be appreciated.
Thank you
Daniel

Yeah, the same thing happened to mine. Honda engines are very well engineered, and have a lot of failsafes. When the engine senses one of the many common and small problems (O2 sensor, PCV valve, EGR valve, ect) it'll turn the engine light on, but continue to run with its last known "good" parameters. Just because it doesn't seem like something's wrong DEFINATLY doesn't mean there isn't. Even if you have a mechanic turn the light off, your ECU will just turn it back on again. Get your codes read, and the problem fixed. ASAP.

Yeppers...or could be time for a maintence check. Honda's are known for poppin engine codes all the time. My buddy works at Honda and says alot of times it pops just so customers will get maintence done ontime like Timing belt and Tune ups ya know stuff like that. Yah run a scan tool on it regardless might be a sensor and you could loose gas mileage.:noes:

put a paper clip in the service connector and look for the CEL to blink. Long blink = 10, short blink = 1

Default Hesitation at high speed

I was driving today and when i floored it the car accelerated like normal, but once i reached around 70 mph the car hesitated then shifted into top gear. When I got home, I gave the car some gas and it hesitated at a high rpm. Does that sound like a spark plug to anyone, would that put the check engine light on?

The only way to tell why the light came on is to have the code checked.

I had a CEL (check engine light) in my 1998 SH once. It ended up being my primary oxygen sensor. I had the code reset and it never came on again.

Most autoparts stores around here will do a free code reading.

if you leave your gas cap loose it will set the light, but would not cause performance problems

if you're int he US go to the autozone and tell them your check engine light is on they'll check for codes for free and tell you what the codes mean, ( might try some local parts places if you don't have autozone where you live)
