Default rack & pinion leaking?

Hey everyone...bought myself a 92 Prelude SR (sold the delSol) and today I had to get an inspection done in order to register the car....it failed because they said the rack & pinion (excuse spelling) has a leak & will eventually effect my steering - safety issue I guess...anyway, they say there is some fluid on the back right boot....can anyone tell me if this is a major thing.....of course I have to have it replaced in order to pass the inspection....or can that part be repaired over replacing....thanks for the help

Thanks mikemerc85....am taking it over to my mechanic Wednesday....the shop who did the inspection said the part was $583....WHOA....and labour will be about 5 hours.....total around $1100.00 (Canadian) This is why I hate being a girl taking my car to someone I don't know, but I had no choice for this kind of vehicle inspection....my mechanic said he can get the part reconditioned for $250.00 plus 3 hours labour....sound better? Just looking for anyone who has had this part replaced for advice.

Thanks again

What is this mechanic replacing, the boot or the whole rack & pinion? For that price it sounds like the whole thing. The boot on mine has been ripped for years and the steering has never been affected. 3 years ago when I first noticed the boot being ripped up, I called a dealership and they said said the boot was like $100 or something, well I couldn't afford that at the time so I didn't fix it and ended up forgeting about it. I understand you need it fixed to pass inspection though. Anywho, $1,100 (Canadian or not) seems like too much for just a leaky boot.

Hey 2legit2quit....yah that quote was for the whole rack & pinion....I am definately gonna get my mechanic to check if it is just the boot....I have no problem replacing the whole part if it is needs to be done (and he can keep it around $500 total w/ a reconditioned part)......but if it's just the boot, then he'll just do that.....the thing is the car only has 140,000kms and was owned by the original owner from 92...a 60 year old teeeny 90 pound lady.....the car is mint! However.....things still can go wrong even it it has never been abused.
