Default Oil Consumption

Greetings!

I am newby to this forum (but not to Preludes), so I apologize if I am posting something that has already been beaten to death.

What is the experience of all you 'Lude owners with oil comsumption? My "98 has always eaten a quart or two between oil changes. Am I alone?

No, that sounds about right. Mine eats about a quart or so every 3k miles. Depends on how often you hit VTEC as well. VTEC loves oil

Its from being at high RPM, everything spinning in the head (mainely the cams) creates high oil pressure in the head. To relieve this pressure there is a hose going from the valve cover into your intake piping and the oil goes into the intake manifold which gets burned. Going through oil when you VTEC is only healthy.

The 5th gens generally will smoke a little in VTEC, but not when driving normal or at idle. If you do see smoke when you're not in VTEC, there's a problem.

So long as you change the oil regularly and keep the level up (I check mine every time I fill up the gas), you should have no problems. These are pretty bullet proof engines if maintained properly.

Thanks for clearing up the mystery for me. I love the VTEC song, so I like to make my 'lude sing when the situation allows.

If you are in VTEC frequently, check your oil every time you put gas in the car. Get into that habit. I always keep a quart of oil in the trunk so I can just add a little when I need it. I know some people think I'm either insane for buying a car that normally burns oil or my engine is bad.......

I tell them it's a Honda thing. They wouldn't know

That was my plan too, until the bottle mysteriously OPENED IN MY TRUNK. Oil every where. You might not thing a quart is that much but MAN that took a while to get out. Watch out for that. And I swear I put the cap on tight.
