Sounds like your speed sensor on the tranny is shot. In order to check the codes there is a blue plug under the back of the radio. Might help to take off the center console around the radio. Pull the plug out of its little hiding place and place a jumper wire or non-insulated paperclip in the holes. turn the car to the on position (but don't start the car). The check engine light will blink a number of times and then stop for 3 seconds and repeat. the way to read it is every long blink is 10 and every short blink is 1 (so 4 long and 3 short is 43). there may also be more than one code so pay attention (ie 4 long 3 short..pause.. 2 long 3 short is a code 43 and then code 23). From there you would have to do a search to find check engine codes to see what yours is. I use the alldata at work. It's really easy once you do it. Good luck

I got the same problem right now with my 92 Civic LX. I was driving and all of a sudden the speedometer decided to get a mind of its own and then died. Shortly after my CEL came on and i did the self test and got a 1 Long 7 Short. you'll prolly get the same code. It is as sleepersol stated your speed sensor has decided to give up on you. I opted not to get this problem taken care of since i was hoping to get a new tranny. I suggest u get that looked at A.S.A.P. It could be caught somewhere in ur tranny and could be tearing it apart slowly. If its still visible and everything if u got the money to fix it then go ahead if not. Dont. I didnt get mine fixed and i just put a piece of duct tape so i dont see the CEL ne more :chuckles:
