Default 89' Prelude Braking problem

Ok, here is the story: This is my wife's car. While she was driving back from work, on the highway, her brakes failed. She explains that she would stomp on the brakes several times and the pedal would just feel light and go all the way down to the carpet. She had to use the e brake to stop. Once she got home (using the e brake all the way), I checked out the car. I checked brake fluid levels, and they were good. I inspected the all pads, and they are half way worn. Nothing out of the ordinary. I turned the car on, and pushed the brake pedal and sure enough it hit the floor. However, after pumping it once, it seemed to gain pressure and the brakes were working again. I suspected the master cylinder to be bad, but then why are the brakes working properly now? Has anyone had this happen to them? Thanks.

do you think it could also be the brake lines? how long has it been since you've bled them?
