Hey I have a question, if I buy a H22A engine w/o the transmission, would it be a good idea to get a 5sp F22 tranny over the H22 tranny or not? let me know whats the best idea. what would be quicker etc.

 

Heres the gearing: H22 in blue, f22 in black (sorry it wont line up)

F22 engine (M2L5 tranny) - H22 engine (M2F4 tranny)
1- 3.307 1- 3.307
2- 1.810 2- 1.950
3- 1.230 3- 1.360
4- .903 4- 1.071
5- .705 5- .870
Final Drive - 4.062 Final Drive - 4.266

The main differnece - the f22 tranny has "longer" gears. The f22 tranny will bolt up to a h22, but you are better off with a h22 tranny. The longer gears may cause you to drop out of vtec, even when shifting at redline, which is exactly the opposite of what you want to happen. You dont want to drop out of your power band every time you shift. For refference - the h23 tranny is geared in between these two. Bottom line, stick with the h22 tranny

would a vtec controller help in the situation that one had to get a f22 tranny? help make the f22 trans not insult the 2.2vtec TOO much?

 

if u want a top speed of like 150: then buy the f22

if u want to be quick to 90: buy the h22 tranny

if u want to be almost as quick in 1-2-3 as the h22a tranny, but absolutely slaughter in 3-4-5 then get the h23a1 tranny

ive had the h22a tranny and the h23a1 tranny installed over the past year, and i like the h23a1 tranny better.

i raced a prelude with the exact same setup as me, it was also a 92. we also both had I/H and stock exhaust.
i have a USDM h22a1 and he had a JDM h22a

he pulled about 3 feet on me to 3rd gear, at which point he shifted into 4th before me, and thats when i walked him like he wasnt moving all the way to 130.

i love my h23a1 tranny

i'd stay keep the h22 tranny cuz its been geared for the vtec of a h22.... my two cents maybe im wrong but the other tranny may not quite the same

 

i have never had a problem dropping out of vtec with my h23a1 tranny.
its never happened
however having driven both tranny's in one weekend, id say that the h23a1 doesnt line up with VTEC as much as the h22a/1 tranny. the h22a tranny just comes in almost exactly AT vtec.

and i DID occasionally drop out of VTEC in the h22 tranny. because u are shifting at redline to hit enagement in the next gear. and if u shift below redline by too much then u end up bogging at like 4500 in the next gear.

i prefer the h23a1 tranny. in fact i swapped the h22a tranny in the weekend i did my ACT clutch upgrade and then out the next weekend, in favor of the h23a1 tranny.

my preference is also based largely on the fact that my average cruising speed on the parkway/expressway is about 80-85, and that is around 4000 rpms in 5th gear.

Its getting time for a clutch so i figure i'll try to get a hold of a h22 tranny for my h23. I need the shorter gears to get up and go.........most importantly 3rd gear. ill kill anything off the line through 2nd, 3rd is always the problem. im thinking the shorter h22 gearing will help this problem. I never see any threads on this idea, so i thought id bring it up.

boom - how are you going to shift and "bog" at 4500 rpms with an h22 tranny and not have the same problem with a h23 tranny?
