I think I figured it out. For some reason if the Pilot red light isn't on, the camera takes the picture all weird like that. I guess the cheap batteries I have don't suffice.

Yes Sir, basically the pilot light. Once it turns red "ready" I can take a pic with no problem. I feel like such a n00b deluxe
