SAN FRANCISCO -- U.S. automakers might be making gains in quality, but Japanese cars still trounce other makes when it comes to reliable used vehicles, according to Consumer Reports' latest list of top used-car gems.

The 18 autos highlight Consumer Reports' Used Car Yearbook, which details 256 models from 1995 to 2002. It's available for $5.99 at www.consumerreports.org/usedcars. Prices are based on the average dealer asking price, based on average mileage for the model year.

The Ford Escort, for being a ravving piece of shit back when it debuted, isn't bad in the 1997-1999 iteration.
I agree with everything listed on there, although the Buick Regal seems a little goofy, even though it's fairly reliable.

It seems the price for Japanese used cars can be borderline ridiculous. In my area, some 93/94/95 Civics are selling for over 6k! Despite being almost 10-yrs. old most of these cars are in good condition and going strong.
