Nissan seeking hip, 'modern sexy mom' market with new Quest minivan

By MARK RECHTIN | Automotive News

Forget soccer moms as the target audience. Nissan wants the buyer of its new Quest minivan to be a "modern sexy mom."

With the 2004 Quest a standout design departure from the rest of the minivan pack, Nissan makes it clear that it is aiming for a different kind of buyer. In taking the bold step, Nissan is gambling that it can find 85,000 Americans annually who want a minivan but haven't found one stylish enough to buy.

Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan Design America's interim design director, says automakers don't give minivan buyers enough credit for being hip. During market research, he says, he was shocked to discover how trendy stay-at-home moms are.

One example: women who knew that Kmart was selling a European toothbrush created by a hip designer.

"The masses are being exposed to very modern things," Albaisa said at the vehicle's press introduction here. "Our design may be avant-garde for minivans, but it's not for Nissan."

Quest chief product specialist Atsushi Nakatsuji - who coined the "modern sexy mom" tag - said that Nissan designed the greenhouse with more glass and lowered the instrument panel for the driver to be attention-getting.

Unfortunately, the shape of the greenhouse glass, as well as the broad shoulders of the sheet metal, didn't allow designers to integrate the sliding door track into the seam between the glass and sheet metal. As a result, the track mars the vehicle's rear quarter-panel, clearly labeling it a minivan.

The new Quest is a far cry from its predecessor, which was a Mercury Villager twin and built at a Ford plant in Avon Lake, Ohio.

The 2004 model is nearly 10 inches longer, with nearly a foot-longer wheelbase. It is 4 inches taller and almost 3 inches wider.

The minivan will be built at Nissan's new plant here. It will share a platform with Nissan's Altima, Maxima and Murano.

But the automaker will not rely only on catchy design to sell the Quest. It has many features that put it on a par with the industry leaders.

It has the widest sliding door opening in its class. It's third-row seat tumbles into the floor, like the Honda Odyssey, and the second-row seats fold flat, allowing a 4-by-8 sheet of plywood to fit inside. The handgrips are smaller in circumference and positioned lower for children trying to enter the vehicle.

The optional Skyview roof allows children to look up and out of the vehicle, instead of feeling penned in. Both the second and third rows can have their own DVD screen.

Standard features include four-wheel independent suspension; four-wheel ventilated disc brakes with ABS; traction control; trip computer; 16-inch wheels; keyless door locks; 150-watt AM/FM/CD stereo; side curtain airbags; eight cupholders; front and rear air conditioning; power windows and mirrors; and four 12-volt power points.

The Quest goes on sale in late July. Pricing is not finalized but is expected to start around $24,600 for the base model and run as high as $37,000 for a loaded version. Nissan expects 70 percent of sales to be under $30,000.

Wow the title of this thread is somewhat......arousing.....

What is "modern sexy mom"? Let me guess....hope the moderator wouldn't lock this thread due to my response.....

A early forty years old woman with thin-framed glasses on and her long brunette hair tied into a sexy bun with a few strings of hair falling by the side of her beautiful face.....wearing a black with white vertical strips super super tight tailored business suits and matching color short skirt which only covers half of her thighs.....underneath the tight dark colored jacket a white pearl-buttoned-in-the-front silky long sleeves blouse which barely contain what is inside, with the top few buttons undone and showing the lacy edge of her black victoria secret push up bra and long line of cleavage showing the upper half of her creamy breasts......by the hem of her skirt you could see the lacy sexy top of her dark stockings and a clip for the garter belts....also a 4" shiny black high heels........pearl necklace and dangling earrings.....with a light shade of makeup on and pink lips......long curve up dark eyelashes.......light green eye shadows....Her lovely 12 years old daughter and 8 years old twin sons sitting on the second row of the minivan watching the DVD movie provided by the entertainment system while their "modern sexy mom" driving them to school and then get to her big office to work.........

My description is stupid......well but that was the first picture I got in my brain when I saw the words "modern sexy mom". Hey moderator erase my response if you feel neccessary, even myself feel this post is not appropriate in this site.......
