Default Robby Gordon Will Run Indianapolis 500 with Honda Power

Torrance, Calif. 04/25/2003 -- Versatile veteran Robby Gordon will compete at this year's Indianapolis 500 with Honda power, driving for Andretti Green Racing as a substitute for the injured Dario Franchitti.
California native Gordon, who has eight previous Indianapolis 500 starts, has raced and won in a wide variety of racing disciplines, including CART Champ Cars, SCORE off-road, and NASCAR Winston Cup. Gordon's best previous Indy finish was fourth in 1999. He also has a pair of fifth place results (in 1994 and '95), and started on the front row (third) in 2001. He currently competes full time in NASCAR, driving for Richard Childress Racing.

"We are very pleased to have Robby Gordon join the Honda IRL 'family'," said Robert Clarke, Vice President and General Manager of Honda Performance Development. "As a previous open-wheel race winner, Robby is a worthy replacement for Dario and a great addition to our Indy lineup this year."

For the fourth time in his career, Gordon will run "The Memorial Day Double", racing at both Indianapolis and the 600-mile Winston Cup event held at Lowe's Motor Speedway in North Carolina later the same day.

"I'm thrilled to have the chance to attempt one of the ultimate racing challenges again this year and hopefully win both races," said Gordon. "Running an Andretti Green-prepared car will no doubt give me a good shot at having one win down and one to go when I head to Charlotte that afternoon."

In three previous attempts at taking part in both events, Gordon's best results came last year when he finished eighth at Indy and 16th at the Winston Cup event. In 1997, his first attempt, rain postponed the Indianapolis 500, while another rain delay in 2000 caused Gordon to miss the start and opening laps of the Winston Cup event.

Gordon joins seven other Honda-powered drivers entered at Indy, including: Andretti Green teammates Michael Andretti, Dan Wheldon and Tony Kanaan; Kenny Brack and Jimmy Vasser with Team Rahal; Greg Ray with Access Motorsports; and Roger Yasukawa with Super Aguri Fernandez Racing.
