BMW to unveil xActivity crossover concept vehicle at Detroit show
BMW is set unveil its xActivity concept at the North American International Auto Show 2003 in Detroit. BMW says its self-proclaimed Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) serves as an example of how sporty driving dynamics, versatility and driving an open-top vehicle can be combined into one.
BMW says the concept, which is widely regarded as an almost production-ready representation of the X3 sport utility the automaker plans to launch in 2004, serves as an indication of the future direction of its X range. BMW is planning to launch the X3 as the 'little brother' to its strong-selling X5 mid-size sport ute.

The typical BMW use of a long wheelbase and short overhangs help give the xActivity a sporty appearance and the strong bumpers and flared wheel arches make the concept look pretty robust.
Probably the most striking feature is the roof. Using a so-called frame-structure convertible, it combines the lightness of a convertible with the strength of BMW's SAV design. Longitudinal members on both sides run from the A-pillars to the rear end, and between them the driver and passengers can get a dose of the sun and the wind. There are no B- or C-pillars.
The tailgate is also interesting. As soon as it's opened, a system partially ejects the cargo, for example two mountain bikes, from the loading area. This facilitates the unloading of the bikes.
The interior looks modern and is spacious. There's a single-button control of all air-conditioning functions to simplify the operation. And the vehicle features the “Command Position”, BMW’s high seating position, which is characteristic of its Sports Activity Vehicles.
BMW's 3.0-liter straight six powers the concept, developing 231-hp. 18-inch wheels and tires give the truck an agressive look the suspension and low center of gravity ensure quick handling and a high degree of agility. Electronics automatically ensure each wheel is allowed the precise amount of slip needed to provide fast progress on loose surfaces.
i wonder where it'll be priced.. and how it will perform offroad.. if at all...

The Element is roughly going to be the same size, have the same capabilities, and come with similar features, but whereas the Element starts at around 16k I guarantee you won't be able to get in the door of an X3 for anything less than 32k.
Yes, that's why I'm only comparing them based on the look. You can't really compare BMW to Honda/Acura even though they have similar features, capabilities, etc. Just look at BMW 330i and TL/TL-S, you can have them with similar features, capabilities, but still BMW will always be more expensive.
