The reason for the 'very strong domestic presence' in the candidates is because only brand new models for that year are qualified to compete. There were probably more new domestic brand car models than there were import brands.

And like I said, its nothing significant in them chosing an import brand product for 2006. 3 of the last 4 years, including 2006, the MT's COTY award went to import brand (G35, Prius, Civic).
