I would like to believe that you can't simply switch something between aluminum to steel without some significant design differences.

What is Volkswagen thinking? They keep trying to go upscale, then why do they need Audi?

It's their master group plan. Volkswagen Group (VW, Skǒda, Bentley) is supposed to be more sedate and Audi Group (Audi, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Seat) is supposed to be sport. Thus, Audi and VW "don't compete".
