2008 Hyundai Equus large luxury sedan spy shots
The Equus isn't going to be an Avalon competitor. That's what the Azera is for. The Equus in its current form sold in Korea is rwd and has a V8. One would presume the new one if brought here would be the same.
I'm guessing maybe they'll have the V6 as the base engine and have a V8 as an upgrade engine. But the current V8 while 4.5 liters only makes 260 hp, so maybe the V6 will simply replace it.

And yes, this is an Avalon competitor unless you can tell me this will cost over $35k, which I highly doubt. People will cross shop the two, making them competitors. I don't really care if it has FWD or RWD, it'll likely be in the same price range and will appeal to very similiar types of buyers.

We don't know what sort of equipment the Equus will have, let alone how much it'll cost or even if it's being brought to market here in the USA.
Azera pricing is going to start around $28-29k, unless they add some deconted models with cloth seats and no sunroof to go like the Avalon XL. So far they've given indication that they're only going after the upper trim levels and don't really care about old people who want the biggest car possible with no equipment.
Equus if it is brought at all won't be here for another two years, and at that point in time who knows how much they'll try and charge for it. In its current form with a V8 and stuff like rear-seat DVD video I'd say it's rather much of a step up from the Avalon Limited in terms of equipment. Who knows how much it'd cost here in the USA.
But to assume that Hyundai is going to use two completely distinct cars just to compete with the Toyota Avalon in a relatively small market niche (even though Avalon sales have gone up a bunch since the new one came out) seems rather silly.
