Default 2006 or 2007 Lamborghini Murcielago power boost & facelift spy shots

With the Murcielago's smaller brother, the Gallardo, pushing 500bhp and risking treading on the 580bhp Murcielago's toes, expect this revised version to be even faster, after it undergoes its biggest raft of changes since its introduction in 2001.

Minor alterations for the 2005 model year have already been introduced, such as improved brakes and lightly tweaked damping, but these revisions should take the scissor-doored, V12 coupé to another level.

Some rumours have it that the current model's 6.2-litre V12 will be replaced by a 6.5-litre version of the quad-cam, 48-valve engine, developing more than 600bhp. This would take the Murcielago closer to matching the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren and Ferrari Enzo.

Some reports suggest that the latest car could develop over 650bhp, but that sounds rather optimistic to us - somewhere around 620bhp being a more realistic estimate. Even so, that should be enough to drop the 0-62mph time from 3.8 to around 3.5 seconds, and raise the top speed from 205mph to around 210mph, perhaps a little more.

Visually, changes to the already rather striking supercar remain minimal. There are no obvious changes to large bodywork panels, which is not surprising given the likely cost of developing new pressings, but it appears that both front and rear bumpers and the panel above the rear number plate will get some attention.

Also new are the wheels. Still five-spoke, the front ones don't - at least at this speed and distance - look entirely dissimilar to the current model's. However, those rear wheels appear far more heavily sculpted.

There's no word yet on when the new Murcielago might arrive, but if it's going to be the 2006 model year, then a Frankfurt motor show debut in September isn't out of the question. And don't be surprised if the price creeps up a little from its current £162,000.

In recent years, Lamborghini's new Gallardo has had most of the attention, but that doesn't mean that Lamborghini is overlooking its top-of-the-line supercar, the Murcielago. These latest photos from the Nürburgring racetrack in Germany show Lamborghini personnel putting the Murcielago through high-speed testing. The test car has some black tape to hide recent changes, which include a subtle reshaping of the front bumper. Also note the new wheels.
