Motor Trend Names Chrysler 300 2005 Car of the Year
Chrysler awarded prestigious Golden Calipers from a field of 24 Contenders

Motor Trend magazine, the world's number one automotive authority and part of the PRIMEDIA Consumer Automotive Group, today announced the selection of the Chrysler 300 as the 2005 Motor Trend Car of the Year. Now in its 56th year, the title of Motor Trend Car of the Year is the most coveted and most recognized award in the automotive industry.
"The Chrysler 300 is an extremely compelling combination of power, responsiveness, room and refinement," said Angus MacKenzie, editor-in-chief of Motor Trend. "A home run on significance, a slam dunk on value, and clearly superior to its rivals in every way, the Chrysler 300 is truly deserving of the 2005 Motor Trend Car of the Year award.
After weeks of extensive performance testing, Motor Trend editors found the Chrysler 300 to be a daring re-invention of the great American sedan. The Chrysler 300 not only has world class levels of performance, road-holding and refinement, but is also the first U.S.-built mainstream sedan in decades with bold, expressive and confidently American styling.
This year, the editorial staff of Motor Trend conducted testing on 24 new vehicles, from sports cars to minivans, searching for the automobile that best represented exceptional value, superiority in its class, and the most significant development on the new-car scene for 2005. Only truly new or substantially revised cars were considered with the condition that they be available for public sale by January 1, 2005.

they say it has "confidently american styling", yet every car person i know agrees that they styled it after a bentley....
whatever. i dont think its a bad choice for car of the year. it is exceptionally cheap for what you get, even if it is a total pig.

mt picked the malibu as a coty (but remember mt had in import and a domestic winner at that time)
i think the 300 is a rightful winner, as it has completely helped turn chrysler around...as chrysler loses grip on its minivan juggernaut to honda and toyota - it's failed rebadged psuedo sportscar the crossfire, chrysler did what it does best...big heavy powerful rwd sedans and people came in droves to buy them

have anyone of you guys driven or rode in the 300?
man I feel like a little kid! the side of the door are so damn high! even my friend who is 6'4" felt like a little kid :chuckles: the stock engines suck btw, not enough power. I've yet to try to Hemi

I've driven the 3.5 and the 5.7. They're good BIG cars but they're not great. I don't think they're car of the year material unless you just want to be lazy and pick a car that people would have a hard time disagreeing 100% at the expense of picking a car that not a whole lot of people would agree with. It'll make people buy the magazine so what the hell do they care.

The whole point of this award is to pick a car that is significant in the market, not necessarily significant to enthusiasts.
The choices this year were: Acura RL, Audi A6, BMW 6 Series, Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac STS, Chevrolet Corvette, Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum, Ford Five Hundred, Ford Mustang, Honda Accord Hybrid, Honda Odyssey, Kia Amanti, Kia Spectra, Lotus Elise, Mazda 3, Mercedes-Benz SLK, Mercury Montego, Pontiac G6, Porsche 911, Saab 9-2x, Scion tC, Subaru Legacy and Volvo S40/V50.
Among those, which is likely to make a big splash in the general automotive market? Scratch all the luxury cars and sports cars because they're sold in too small numbers. The 9-2x and S40/V50 are reasonably priced but also not mass produced. Same with the tC. Cross the uberblandmobiles off the list too. That leaves us with the Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum, Ford Mustang, Honda Accord Hybrid, Honda Odyssey, Mazda 3, Pontiac G6, and Subaru Legacy.
Of these cars, which presents something truly new to their segment? The G6 is made by GM and not as crappy as a Grand Am, but that's not really anything significant. The Odyssey and 3 are both really nice for their segments, but so were their predecessors. The Legacy has the new turbocharged GT model and a nicer interior, but is that a segment buster?
So that comes down to the 300, Magnum, Mustang, and Accord Hybrid. To me, any of these four would be a worthy choice.
