Default Bentley bringing Continental GT-based sedan sometime in 2005

Ignore the tacked-on Mercedes-like grille and fancy tape around the taillamps in a familiar Mercedes shape. This is no Mercedes: it's actually a new sedan based on the Bentley Continental GT Coupe, and built to compete with the upcoming Mercedes S-Class and others in the luxury sedan market. A convertible on this same platform is expected to be introduced shortly after the introduction of this sleek Bentley sedan.

We'll officially see this Continental GT Coupe-based sedan late in the 2005 model year, or possibly as an early 2006 introduction.

Bentley may build a new sedan based on its Continental GT coupe in Germany, a report from Reuters says. The new "baby Bentley," distantly related to VW's Phaeton sedan, could in fact be built in the Dresden factory that builds the Phaeton. "Since the factory (in Crewe, England) is reaching full capacity, one could theoretically build some of the smaller four-door Bentley models, which are expected to hit the market around the middle of next year, in Dresden," a spokesman told the news agency. Because stalwart models like the Arnage are still assembled in Great Britain, Bentley's very-British image could remain intact. The new sedan would be positioned among the biggest Benz S-Class, Jaguar XJ, BMW 7-Series, and Maserati Quattroporte sedans.

The front grille is one hundred percent Mercedes-Benz sedan's grille style.

Bentley has now officially confirmed that it's going to be building this car.

Bentley will present a four-door sedan based on the Continental GT coupe at the Geneva auto show in March.

"The car will have the same engine as the coupe," said Bentley boss Franz-Josef Paefgen in an interview with Automobilwoche, a German sister publication of AutoWeek. "Its price will be on a similar level, maybe slightly above."

The British luxury brand's two-door Continental GT with a 560-hp W12 engine costs about $156,485.

To avoid long delivery times, Bentley parent company Volkswagen AG is considering adding an assembly line at the Dresden, Germany, plant. The plant now builds the slow-selling VW Phaeton, which shares a platform with the Continental GT.

Paefgen said a convertible version of the Continental might be launched in 2006.
