Saturn adding Kappa-based rwd halo car to lineup
Saturn will get a rear-wheel-drive sporty car in early 2006, General Motors said on Monday.
The new Saturn will share GM’s Kappa architecture with the Pontiac Solstice and also be assembled at the Wilmington, Del., plant. The name of the vehicle has yet to be announced.
The car “will serve as a halo vehicle for Saturn,” said Robert Lutz, GM’s vice chairman for product development. “It is the first vehicle of its type for the growing brand and showcases a dramatic new styling direction.”
Saturn will add three other vehicles to its lineup in the next three years: a minivan called the Relay due this fall; a mid-sized vehicle based on the same architecture as the Chevrolet Malibu and due in 2006; and an SUV.
At the 2004 North American International Auto Show, General Motors displayed the Saturn Curve concept. The two-seater sports car was based off the Kappa architecture.

GM isn't so much into cloning with its new "architectures" instead of platforms. Look at the Opel Vectra, Saab 9-3 and Chevy Malibu. They're all on the Epsilon platform and I don't think if the three cars were parked next to each other anyone would notice they're siblings. I mean, notwithstanding the fact that it would be next to impossible to get a Malibu on the same continent as a Vectra...

If this car looks anything like the Curve or Sky coupe concepts that Saturn had before - no thanks. I'm not sure Saturn's image will improve even with this "halo car" in its product mix. I just don't think I can ever get the perception of cheap, plasticky cars equaling Saturn out of my head.
