Eh, the Focus ain't so bad and the cars are only 60% shared among each other. The S40 should be around the same price as an Audi A4, maybe a little cheaper given similar equipment. The Focus isn't going to be sold on this platform in the USA until 2007 at the earliest.

All I need to know is a loaded up 3s 4-door 5-speed with ABS, side and curtain air bags, sport package, xenons, tire pressure monitoring, leather and navigation would sticker at $21,625.

So for your $21k you can get a nice refined compact sedan with a buttload of features, or you can get an SRT-4. They obviously don't compete but in either case it's kind of a manufacturer taking an econobox the furthest it can go in one particular direction. With the 3 that's Bimmerness (for lack of a better term), with the SRT-4 that's raw performance.

what was the HP rating on the 2.3L engine? 160hp?

I'd get a wagon with 1AB, 1PP, 1XP.

BTW you have a typo there?

Yeah, the 2.3 is 160 hp. 1PP is standard on the 3s. 1SP is standard on the 3s 5-door.

Too bad there's no car that combines both the Mazda3 and the SRT-4 and add a few more grand. That would be a perfect car for around $25k. The 2004 SRT-4 dyno @ 248WHP. That's freaking insane.

Hopefully we'll get a Mazdaspeed 3 that will have that covered
