Saturn To Ditch the Infamous Plastic Door Panels

So the Ion and Vue will have plastic door panels for the forseeable future but the L-series replacement will be steel bodied.
Conceivably GM can make a good mid sized car. The Sigma platform has produced good results in the Opel Vectra and Saab 9-3. The L-series is based on the old Vectra. Although the new Chevy Malibu is also built on that platform and that car is not exactly what I would call exciting. At least it's just boring and not a piece of shit though.
GM's a mess. Maybe in 15 years they'll be straightened out but it's going to take at least that long if they stick to their traditional doctrine of keeping a model around until it's painfully long in the tooth.
"It gets crappy mileage."

Like the 128964935679136578136 WRX owners that realized their car was an overhyped boat 6 months after they bought it. (Several Basement members come to mind.
)
On a related note, I came across an old SL1 sedan in traffic on Sat. night.
And God, I have never seen a less- roadworthy car in my life.
The outside mirrors had been knocked clean off, with old-school round mirrors screwed into the door. :eh:
The rear windows were made of clear plastic bags, with no rear windscreen at all.
And on top of it all, every plastic panel had fist-sized holes in it, as if a hailstorm of sledgehammers had rained down upon it.
The motor sounded like a filing cabinet full of gravel, rolling down a flight of stairs.
And despite all of the above....
It had an APC banner on the front windscreen.
I damn near died laughing.... :rofl:

The thing that Saturn was initially intended to succeed with (import fighter, specifically Honda), it could not accomplish -- the irony here is that the real GM divisions (which couldn't do it before, and the reason Saturn was created in the first place) are turning around and not so slowly becoming import fighters. In a few years, Saturn will not be needed. In fact, I think Lutz sees Saturn as more of a hinderence to his ulimate plan than anything else. It's clear that GM is focusing on Cady, Pontiac, Chevy, and Buick. Saturn is the ugly, forgotten stepchild. Imagine the money GM would have saved if they never created that stupid division in the first place.
