Default was your first bike new or used?

i have the option right now of getting a older zx6r, 04 r6, or a new 1000rr. i want the rr bad but i dont want to tear it up drop it etc. the zx i've known the bike since it was new no accidents and the r6 is supposedly clean. rr is 11k, zx is 2500, and r6 is 4. which would you guys get as a first bike? i am leaning towards the zx because its cheap and if i dont like it i can get rid of it without being out too much money

My first bike was a '92 CBR 600. I got it used in '95 with less than 4000 miles on it. I would HIGHLY suggest NOT getting a 1000cc sport bike as your first bike. The 6R Kawi would be a great all around bike that can do everything and more than you'll ever need it to do. Consider taking the MSF course to get your license and definitely buy GOOD gear.

buy the gear before the bike or you will have people calling you an organ donor. i'd suggest starting out on a much smaller bike- try a ninja 250 or if you are on the larger side a ninja 500

they are cheap, relativly quick, VERY AGILE and easy to manage, for any beginner anything over 500 can be very iffy. plus it's better to learn on something you can control. once you get the basics down sell it to another beginner and then buy yourself a brand new 600

anything over a 600 is asking for trouble with anyone with less than a few years experience and the weight to toss around.

My first bike was used. It was a 2000 Suzuki GS500. I'm not the type of person to tell someone what bike to start on; your life, your skin. But I'll tell you something, starting on a smaller displacement bike would less likely put you in one of those ,'oh sh*t' moments. It'll be easier to control and if you drop it, oh well, you know? Take it easy on the first bike. Get something small and used. But like I said, your life, your skin. And just to add, just because you may have all the proper gear on doesn't mean you'll be immune to any kind of injury; it'll just decrease the chance a bit.

Plus, wouldn't it be badass to have like an ex250 and then head to your local twisties where all the 'squids' hang out with their biggest and baddest sportbikes as their first bike and then out ride them like the chumps they are after all the sh*t talking they do about you starting on something, 'small'? heh I know I'd love it.

i don't think i can ride anything smaller than the ninja. i am 6'1 and about 225 so i think i'll be getting a new clutch in a 250 real quick trying to get me moving. i think i am going to get the ninja it seems pretty unanimous that i shoulodnt get a 1000. thanks for all your input.

You can definately ride a 250... I'm 6'0 myself and I enjoy riding it. I actually have an ex250 track bike. Hell, I know a 6'3, 240 pounds track rider that uses a 250 as well and he constantly smokes me as well as a few other 'experienced' riders at the track with faster bikes.
Well, at least you're staying away from the 1000 for now. When you're more confident and increase your riding capabilities, then you can get the bigger bike.

i wouldnt be worried about tearing the bike up, odds are you'll tear yourself up with that bike.

My first bike was actually a Honda elite if you can call that a bike. Then went to a Honda 250 interceptor and finally moved up to a ZX-6R. I would definitely go with the ZX-6R as the first bike although I dream of having a litre bike one day. The 250 is a good starter but youll quickly outgrow it. A 600 still needs to be bowed down to until you become a proficient rider. In my opinion and I think many others you will drop the bike at least once. I ended up almost totaling my 250 but luckily havent gone down with the 600. I think the 1000 is definitely too much power for a newbie. My 2 cents.
