Default which honda for a first time rider.

I like the honda's 599, but its still crotch rocket so it won't be good for long trips.

The 599 is pretty sporty but the sitting position which is pretty upright to me and the handle bars, kind of make it a standard. It's competition is against the SV650 and the FZ1. Have you ever ridden or sat on it? If you have, then you'd know what I'm talking about. Long trips on these bikes are possible. Hell, they come with sport touring tires for the '06.

A cbr600 F4 is way too much bike for a first-time rider. (there are exceptions I'm sure...)

IMO it's far more fun to get a slower bike at first, and wring the hell out of it.

The F4i makes a great beginner bike. It's the most forgiving and easiest to ride of the 600's from that generation. The newest generation of 600's are more track/race oriented and make too much power & too low of gearing out of the box for a beginner.

A 1000cc machine just makes speed too quickly, and it's too touchy in the slower gears. You really have ot know how to handle a motorcyle before messing with them. I just sold mine, and I wasn't ready until over 20,000 miles on the street and 2000 miles on the reacetrack.

I know everyone says a 600 is good for your first bike. but you do and you will get tired of it fast. I would start off with a 750.
