The 2001-2002 have known transmission issues. It's possible that you may not have any problems at all with a 01-02, but the chances of having transmission failure are greater than the newer models. There was a recall on 2001-2002 in which a oil jet kit was installed but there are some reports that the tranny failed even with the retrofit kit. There are a few other "minor" issues but this is probably the most "severe", even though it's only a "possibility".

Gas mileages is ok with the MDX. On my 2003, I average about 18-20 miles per gallon, depend on how I drive. I do about 70% highway driving.

Good luck!
