Default New Pilot with strong odor

Hello HAN,
I'm new to the forum, having just purchased a 2005 Pilot EX-L. To be brief, the new car scent in the car is overwhelming, and none of us can stand to be in the car for more than a few minutes without needing to roll the windows down (not good when it's almost December). I've Googled VOCs and I know the smell will dissipate in 6 months, but are there any owners with similar experiences? Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Happy Thanksgiving.

its the new car smell, why would you want to get rid of it?

use an air freshener if need be for the time being

Why did you buy it if it stunk so badly?

The "new car smell" is actually plastic and leather out-gassing of Volatile Organic Compounds that have been associated with pulmonary disorders and cancer. So an air freshener isn't going to do it. And I ordered the car new, so I didn't get the chance to "smell it" until the day of delivery.

I would try wiping down the leather surfaces with a dish sponge wet with warm water (not soaked, and not hot). The warmth will open the pores of the leather and hopefully allow it to vent some of the stink. The same technique might help the plastic, but I couldn't say for sure. I don't think it could do any harm.

Benjamin,

Thanks for the post. I actually did just that last night, then let the car sit with the windows open in ther garage all night. It's noticeably better today. I think it's just going to take some time.

Great car, though. It got its first taste of black ice and deer-dodging on Thanksgiving night and handled perfectly.
