It's the sound of the wastegate opening and closing rapidly to regulate the boost level the spring inside is rated at. No cause for alarm, it's just a nasty sound. Since DRAG kits do not reroute the wastegate dumping back into the downpipe, it's released in the air..making that nasty noise. Some people like it, some people don't.

All turbo cars from the factory reroute their wastegate exhaust dump back into the exhaust system. Usually they only have internal wastegates which are part of the turbine housing that take up much less space than an external wastegate.

It generally makes more power open loop unless you make a closed loop system correctly, which includes having the dump tube re-enter into the downpipe at least 18'' away from the turbo and at a 45 degree angle or less. At first the sound really got to me then I dont even hear it anymore. You sure as hell smell it since its dumping in front of you.

Does that mess with the emissions? I figure since that stuff all comes out before the cat, the EPA doesn't like it.

Its illegal to turbo your car, besides the greddy kit anyhow. They would rather have you route it back into your exhaust and through your cat than just straight into the air.
