I have a Skunk 2 Short shifter in my car for at least a couple months now and I have't seen a problem with rattling at all and I put in myself with the help from my brother. As far as the shift knob not going on, i had the same problem. I just put on a different knob that I had lying around. I agree with Pomansouth, just take the coating off with paint remover.
