Default BRAKE light question for you guys

My BRAKE light (parking brake) would not shut off this morning right away. However, it did shut itself off after 5-10 minutes of driving. I triple checked the parking brake lever to make sure it was down the entire way.

Do you guys know what may/might be causing this? Does my brake handle/part need to be adjusted mechanically or something along those lines?

Any information/feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

the cable that runs from the e-brake handle to the rear calipers may be sticking. it may need to be adjusted or replaced

This is the brake light on your gauge cluster? It sounds like you're low on brake fluid. Have you ever looked closely at the brake resevoir lid? It has wires that run from it to somewhere else in the car (ECU). That's a sensor that will tell you when your brake fluid is low. I'm 90% sure that that's the problem. Check it, and fill as needed. It may be time to address a leakage problem elsewhere up the line as well!

I checked the brake fluid level, it's full. I think Ice is onto something with the e-brake handle to the rear calipers sticking/replacing.

The light comes on for either of 2 reasons. Handbrake on or low brake fluid.

Unplug the wires from your brake fluid reservoir; if the problem goes away, then you need a new reservoir cap (bad float sensor). Unless of course the fluid was actually low.

Otherwise, check out the switch for the handbrake lever. It's mounting bracket might be bent or loose. BTW, mine has nothing to do with the cable. It's on the lever.

Most excellent advice, Jim. It seems to happen only in the mornings when the temperature is cooler and dew point is higher.

How does one locate/get to the mounting bracket on the hand brake lever?

Thanks again!

On the lever, you'll just need to remove your armrest. There should be two screws on the side of the armrest compartment, then remove the small access panel in the little area below the handle when it is disengaged. There should be two bolts there and you're done. Just pull it up and towards the front dash and your hand brake assembly is right there.

Yeah - what drumsy said...

It's been a while since I looked at that, but it seems to me the switch was on a little bracket under the lever. When the lever is down it presses on the button of the switch. If the switch is busted or if it's bracket is bent, then even when the lever is down it doesn't press on the switch properly.

Strange that it happens only in the morning for a few miles before fixing itself (even if the hand brake was down previous to driving).
