You can use a lower grade, but according to Acura, "performance will be diminished."

Yes, you need it. Using a lower octane gas other than what your compression and fuel maps are set for increases the chance of detonation. Higher octane is more resistant to detonation. Your Knock Sensor engaging is the "dimished performance" Acura speaks of, as the timing is retarted to compensate for the knocking.

if you getting really cheap, maybe your driving too much. Acura said to use a minimum of 91 for a reason.

I was gonna say, it depends on where you live because around here 91 is midgrade and 93 is premium. I think 91 is the minimum, like XSrcing said.

If you cant afford the few extra dollars for decent gas...then you really shouldnt be in a GSR. It will diminish performance and I don't suggest running hot or high with lower octane in there.

i would find it a damn crime to put anything less than premium here in CA, where thats only 91 octane.
you want to use 91 and up, if you for the NA route, having a high compression ratio and aggressive cams, will lead to detonation and blowing up ur engine.

I've never seen that, here we have 87, 89, and 93.

We have 87 91 93 and Sunoco has a 94 octane too. When I can I put in 94...my gas mileage actually increases over the 93 which goes in if there is not a Sunoco around. My owners manual says that you need atleast 91 octane for the GSR. It may be 10 cents more than 87 per gallon, but on a GSRs 10 gallon tank the most that would be is a whole dollar. Plus your gas mileage will probably go down more with the lower octane and you will need to fill up more often which will cost more. If you are worried about saving money do what Acura recommends, otherwise you might break something that is a lot more costly.

so gs-r's need high octane..
but how about non-vtec cars.. such as my ls?
cuz i put the lowest grade of fuel in it.. always have..
cuz since its not that of a high compression engine i dont think it needs it?
